Documentaries, Storytelling and Pittsburgh - My Tale of “My Tale of Two Cities”

We have been patiently waiting for the premier of this movie - My Tale of Two Cities, a documentary about Pittsburgh which has been in the works for a few years now. Back in 2006 we posted the invite to come join in a neighborhood sing along of “Its a beautiful day in the neighborhood.” The film is complete and the screening is November 28, 2008 at the Byham Theater. We started IheartPGH after meeting people who didn’t grow up here but choose to live here - each person had a story about what brought them to Pittsburgh. Those stories turned into three years of stories about people and places in Pittsburgh. So it is hard not be excited about a documentary length story of Pittsburgh which has the potential to take the Pittsburgh story to a whole new audience beyond Western PA. I am eager to see which Pittsburgh stories were selected for this film.

Show Your Love for PGH by Shopping PGH this Holiday Season

One of my hopes for this blog is to connect more people to the local businesses here in Pittsburgh. With the start of the holiday season, I can’t believe it is already the holiday season - I tried to ignore the robotic Santa Claus that started singing at Costco before Halloween was even here. But after stopping by the Shady Side Presbyterian Church Bazaar last weekend, I can no longer pretend that the Holiday Shopping Season is weeks away.

I know that holiday spending is down this year, but that makes it even more important to support the businesses that continue to do good things for the Pittsburgh community. Homemade Ho Hos at Big Dog Coffee

I was finishing lunch with Friend of IheartPGH who suggested that we check out the newest coffee shop on the south side. Big Dog Coffee is located on Sarah street near the South Side works. This place is beautiful - the counter is an old wooden antique, bright walls, comfortable seats (I am sitting in a rocking chair as I write this), there is a patio for outside seating when the weather is a bit warmer. The main room has a lovely fire place - if IheartPGH was a podcast I would be recording the sound of a crackling fire for you.

his place is really that cozy. The desert counter is beautiful and they have homemade ho hos. I think I had forgotten about ho hos, but the idea of a homemade one is amazing. Watch out cupcakes, there is a new tasty treat in town.

Lawrenceville, PA has everything I love about Pittsburgh right in a row. Cupcakes at Dozen, pizza at Piccolo Forno, vintage gems at the several thrift shops and great art in a collection of galleries. I lunched at a new eatery today, Coca Café and can safely say it is one of my favorite restaurants in the city. Just a few doors down from Piccolo, Coca Café sits comfortably on the corner with a trendy red and blue paint job. The specials were written on the sign outside and my eye went directly to the pumpkin bisque, YUM! The eclectic chairs and tables made the shop just funky enough without trying too hard. I ordered the chicken and artichoke wrap, which was a great combination of warm and toasty yet light and fresh. Of course, I had to do a cappuccino and biscotti afterward. I couldn’t decide what kind to get, so I had our lovely server choose her favorite, which turned out to be vanilla apricot, YUM again! The music was just loud enough to get you groovin’ in your seat without inhibiting conversation. And something I love about local places; they accept local artwork that they display, which gives them an extra gold start in my book. Yet another Pittsburgh gem that dazzled me to the point of blogging, check them out online!

Weihnachtsmarkt this weekend is Historic Harmony

Image via WikipediaWeihnachtsmarket is German for Christmas Market. Historic Harmony village, which is about a 25 minute drive north of Pittsburgh, is hosting their annual Christmas Market this weekend (Nov. 15-16, 2008).

Now it has been a few years since I took the tour of the Harmony Museum but here is what I remember about Harmony - The historic Harmony Village is located on the site of the Harmony Colony - which was establised in 1800, the harmonists later moved to Indiana and back to Western, PA. The Harmonists were celibate and eventually they all died.

Big Box Reuse in Your Town, Inc.

Your Town, Inc. is an exhibit at the Miller Gallery, curated by Astria Suparak, at Carnegie Mellon University showcasing 80 photographs by Julia Christensen from her new book Big Box Reuse. Your Town, Inc. will be at the Miller Gallery at Carnegie Mellon University until November 23rd with a lecture and book signing by Christensen Thursday:
